Njiru Aids Centre
Give A Chance is based in UK its a non-profit organization that seeks to build a housing facility/school for AIDS orphans in Kenya. It is estimated that more than 14 million children in the world that have been orphaned to AIDS, and that over a million of these orphans are in Kenya. The number of AIDS orphans in Kenya is extraordinary as are the needs of these children.
Not only is financial support lacking for these children, but in some cases, the social stigma that their parents died of AIDS has lead to the abandonment of these children by their extended family members, caregivers, and their communities.

Give a Chance needs £30.000 to rebuild an existing Aids centre and improve its service.

It is estimated that Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has orphaned more than 14 million children with 11.0 million of them living in sub-Saharan Africa (UNAIDS, 2002). The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes AIDS and the number of HIV infected people in Africa is on the rise (Africa News, 2001).
Since 2001 alone 17 million people died in Africa from AIDS. This virus not only affects adults, but also has affected many children in that they become orphans when their parents succumb to AIDS, and that it reduces the quality of their lives even when their parents are alive. Likewise, some children may be infected with HIV at birth. The lack of education about HIV, and the lack of resources to help treat many AIDS patients in Africa, has caused millions of children in Africa to become orphans.
Project description
We have been funding Njiru Aids Centre which only can house 10 orphans and provide basic food and shelter.
We also provide other services to People with Aids such as a safe sanctuary food and water is provided daily to all.
We now seek to obtain funding for the development of a facility for the AIDS orphans, which will include a school to teach other children who have families but need the vital education for prevention of AIDS.
Environment that provides safety, security, and support. The aim of this project is to build a housing facility.
Project goals
Improve the dignity and quality of life of children and families living with and affected by AIDS through improved health, economic and social status.
1. Building a housing facility to create a place for the children to call home.
2. Prevent future hardships caused by the lack of housing.
3. Reduce poverty level of AIDS orphans.
Project objectives
Within two years 450 parents living with AIDS will communicate and share their health and psychosocial concerns with their children Within two years 450 parents/guardians in AIDS affected families will acquire knowledge and skills in making secure plans for their children's future.
Within 2 years 450 parents affected with AIDS will be running sustainable income generating projects for provision of nutrition, school requirements and essential requirements to the children.
Within 2 years 450 orphans to receive basic education, vocational training and start up grants36 family /child counsellors to be trained to provide counselling.
Sexual reproductive Health, succession planning training to the beneficiaries by end of two years
Baseline
To compile data on families and individual orphans affected by AIDS. Identify the need of such families and individual. Orphans Set targets for project monitoring and evaluation
Project components
Training care takers in children's rights. Assisting a family to designate a guardian Helping families to cope through counselling and sexual reproductive Health training
Activities
1. Hire a contractor and construction crew to build the facility.
2. Partnering with Njiru Aids Centre who has already identified the needs and assets of the community; developed a plan of action and an evaluation plan; acquired land on which to build the orphanage, is establishing an education fund; and is acquiring necessary materials the orphanage needs, such as sheets, clothing, household supplies.
An evaluation of the program’s success is necessary to determine the effectiveness of the project.
We will be in collaboration with Njiru Aids Centre monitoring the progress of the building. Since the facility will take 6 months to build, Give A Chance will visit the development from UK at least twice during six months.
During these visits Give A Chance and the builders will discuss the progress of the housing facility. Njiru Aids Centre will collect data and they will then fill out a progress report to be mailed to us monthly.
This progress report will contain information as to whether the building of the facility is on schedule and according to plan. In addition, two of our project advisors will visit the site at the halfway point (two and a half months), and at the final stages.
One project advisor that is a consultant in building construction will be visiting the site to enable a successful completion of our goals and objectives.
This expert consultant will also be available through the e-mail, telephone, and mail if the contractor needs specific advice.
